Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month! As a certified teacher and parent, I can tell you that each of us learns in different ways. If we want our children to succeed we need to accommodate their learning needs. Here are some good tips to help an any child succeed:

  • identify and focus on your child’s strengths
  • identify and develop your child’s interests
  • give your child real world experiences

Simple things like ordering food, shaking hands (bumping elbows), and introducing oneself are important social skills to practice and develop. Here is a good link to discover more resources.

Homeschoolers: Read the story “Squirrel Nutkin” and explain how squirrel Nutkin developed his social skills.
