Let’s take a trip back in history to 1818, Salzburg, Austria. “Silent Night” is a popular Christmas carol by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. How exciting! Let’s see if we can make some observations and learn from history. Gruberg was a primary school teacher, church organist and composer in the village of Arnsdorf, who is best known for composing the music to “Stille Nacht”. Let’s play Fill-in-the-Blank!

Silent night, _____ night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
_____ in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
_____ quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Savior is born
Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy _____
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus Lord, at Thy _____
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth

Word Bank: holy, sleep, shepherds, night, birth

Homeschoolers: Describe how this song has influenced so many people.
