Have you heard that the state of California is now in a drought? There was not enough snow to provide adequate water. The last time there was a drought in California was in October 2014. Here is the developing story:

  • It ranges from moderate (level D1) to exceptional (level D4)
  • At present 14% of the state was at the worst level
  • Last week 5% of the state was at the worst level
  • The winter rain and snow were well below average
  • The long-term water deficit over the West is creating the potential for a devasting wildfire season
  • California is under an emergency declaration
  • The declaration directs state agencies to take action to modify reservoir releases to conserve water
  • Everything from the Rocky Mountain continental divide westward, including Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico is in a fire danger zone

Homeschoolers: sketch/color an illustration. Describe the drought. Analogy: Read the story called “Three Billy Goats Gruff” and explain why the goats wanted to go over the hill.
